Press Release: Nike Shout Connects Football Enthusiasts to Live Pitch Action at the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010‏

                                          video

Voice out YOUR Support and BE HEARD!

For the first time, Nike allows football fans to be heard, loud and proud, at the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup 2010 games. Debuting at the games, Nike SHOUT is the region’s first digital LED perimeter board that serves to capture and amplify the football moments on pitch via social media, connecting Southeast Asian fans at home and across the region to the players on the pitch, live with their messages of support.

As part of the “Be the Next” campaign, Nike SHOUT is targeted at local youth footballers to inspire them to show their support for their national teams and strengthen their drive to be part of that team someday. Enthusiasts can post their words of encouragement and support and see their messages live on pitch during the AFF Suzuki Cup season which starts 1 December 2010.

Singapore is one of four ASEAN countries (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia) activating the exchange via social media platforms – Twitter and Facebook. Official launch of the platforms commence 29 November 2010 and messages aggregated between the official launch date and the first live match will be selectively streamed on the Digital LED perimeter board on 1 December 2010 to support their national teams.

Untuk Bangsa Dan Negara, MAJULAH! - good luck lads & do us proud!

Be strong, have faith and bring back the cup! ( my wonderful experience with the players)

That was the message from the die hard fans, numbering less than 10, who showed up on a cool Sunday morning yesterday, at Changi Airport Terminal 2.

Their flight was scheduled at 9.50am but the die hard fans turned up as early as 7.30 am to send off their heroes as they embark on another journey to claim back the title they lost to Vietnam, 2 years ago. It was an experience I will never forget as I talked and mingled with some of the players whom I have began to respect, admire and idolize.

Forget the superstars from Real Madrid, Liverpool or Man Utd. These guys are the ones that are flying the flag for our country and I believe that it is my duty to provide them with as much support as I possibly can. You do not have to spend hundreds of dollars on  merchandises to show your support for these guys. By just being there, you will feel that they honestly appreciate your support as they smiled, posed for pictures and made you feel like you are the star instead of them!

The Rooneys and the Torres and the Gerrards to me are no match to the impact made by the Duric, the Rosmans and the Jumaat Jantans that were there at the airport. The best thing about them is that they continuously thanked us for our support and asking us how we are and that they felt that us being there were just disrupting our regular Sunday routine. That to me is a sign of humility even though they are the people that we regard as heroes and superstars. It also showed that they are, after all, normal Singaporeans like you and me!

Sometimes I wonder, what we have become when we judge our athletes by the medals and the money they win when the true goal of sports is about sportsmanship, improving oneself and making friends.

"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning but taking part; the essential thing in life is not conquering but fighting well" -  Pierre de Coubertin

If that is truly what sports is all about, then I feel we have failed. Why?

When our athletes are on their way to games and competitions, we fail to show our support. When they come back empty handed, we criticise instead of acknowledging their efforts. But when they win, everyone wants to have a piece of their glory.

So, on the 28th of November 2010, it truly was an important day in the lives of the Lions. But not  many were there. It would be interesting if the Lions come back on the 29th of December with the AFF Suzuki Cup trophy. Will the crowd be there?

Choosing the Lineup V - banging in the goals!

Play with one or two?

The great debate on whether Raddy should play with one or two strikers is now on. A 4-2-3-1 formation would only allow for one striker while a 4-4-2 formation appears to be the direction Raddy is going judging on the friendly game against Laos. Well, here is my two cents worth; I think that Raddy will field 2 strikers against the Philippines and Myanmmar while only fielding one out and out striker against Vietnam.

For a start, it would be wise if Raddy starts off the tournament with Aleksandar Duric and Agu Casmir, saving Noh Alam Shah for Myanmmar and Vietnam. Alam Shah is prone to collect yellow cards in matches and it would not be a good idea to put him in the game against Philippines as if he collects two yellow cards in the first two games, he will miss the crucial encounter with Vietnam. Also, Duric has shown that he can lead the line well on his own while Agu finished with two goals in the game against Laos.

Our best striker, Alam Shah, should also be rested as his aggression and hard approach would be suitable against Myanmmar who are known to be aggresive themselves. Furthermore, putting him on the bench against Philippines would mean that he will be hungrier than ever when he plays.

And for that, I hope and predict that against Philippines, Duric and Agu will lead the line while the Myanmmar game onwards will see Raddy unleash Along!

Choosing the Lineup IV - The Playmakers

Lets hope that his injury (picked up against Laos) is not serious

The Three Musketeers!

The 3 attacking midfielders to start for the Lions literally pick themselves. There is no dispute or question on who should play behind the lone striker.

Ridhuan Muhammad - The Singaporean Wizard

That is the nickname for Ridhuan Muhammad at his Indonesian Club, Arema Indonesia. So adored by the Aremania that Ridhuan has a very own tshirt made by the fans for him. For your information as well, he is also one of the fastest wingers in Asia and coupled with his willingness to track back and win back the ball for the team, he definitely is an asset to the Lions. A point to note, he has been in a free scoring form this season, notching in 5 goals in 8 games from his right midfield position!

Khairul Amri - 2007 Suzuki Cup Hero

His goal against Thailand in the second leg final will forever be remembered by the Singapore die hard fans. Khairul Amri too is another player to play in the Indonesian league and what an impact he has made. In his debut, he scored a volley after controlling the ball in mid-air, instantly becoming a hit with the Balikpapaners. If not for his unfortunate encounters with injuries, Khairul could have achieved much more. Nevertheless, I would not argue the fact that he could be Singapore's best player right now. Do not forget that he is one player who can turn the game to the Lions favour at any point in time. Just ask the Tampines Rovers fans if you don't believe me!

Shahril Ishak - The Captain!

An astonishing season that saw him score 17 goals and the Player of the Year award, Shahril Ishak looks set to captain the team in Hanoi. His best position of course is also behind the Striker where he is given the freedom to roam around, create spaces and chances for his teammates as well as getting into goal-scoring positions. He has matured alot ever since he joined Home United from Young Lions and lets hope that his sizzling form can win us the title!

Shahdan Sulaiman & Fazrul Nawaz - Able Backups

Coach Raddy will have the luxury of fielding Shahdan Sulaiman and Fazrul Nawaz in the case of any injuries (lets hope that it wil not happen) to the three first choice playmakers. Both gifted with the ball on the ground, they are also quick and pacy. One similar flaw between them is that finishing touch, something that all three (Khairul, Shahril & Ridhuan) possess.

Probable midfield Lineup : Mustafic, Shahdan, Ridhuan, Khairul Amri & Shahril Ishak

Choosing the lineup III - holding midfielders

Losing Hariss Harun is an obvious blow to the team

Partnering Mustafic

If Raddy is to follow the 4-2-3-1 formation that the FAS wants to standardize for all levels of national team, then he has to find 2 holding midfielders to do the job. Not that it is a tough task considering the fact that we have many talented midfielders but it became a little bit more tricky after Hariss Harun's injury and Shi Jiayi's unfortunate problem back home in China.

So, while it is a certainty that one of the positions will be taken up by the ever reliable Mustafic Fahrudin, the other position is still up for grabs.

Replacing Shi Jiayi in the provisional squad is his Home United teammate, Tengku Mushadad, who has yet to gain solid international experience with Raddy. The more likely contender will of course be John Wilkinson but a below par season has left him out of the squad entirely.

Shahdan Sulaiman, after an outstanding season with Home Utd and Tampines Rovers, too can come in to play but he is more of an attacking central midfielder rather than a defensive minded one. But nevertheless, remains a possibility depending on the roles of the two central holding midfielders that will be given by Raddy.

My best bet would be Isa Halim, the strong and muscular former under-23 captain, that will partner the experienced Mustafic. Isa Halim's performances for the Protectors this season have been phenomenal and it is him who pulled the strings for Home Utd after Shahril Ishak left. A point to note, the combative midfielder can break up the opponents' play which will leave Mustafic more freedom to start their own attacks.

Let us not forget that traditional defenders in Noh Rahman and Daniel Bennett can play in the defensive midfield role. But that will leave the backline short of someone with plenty of experience and composure.

And therefore, if Raddy decides to play with two holding midfielders ( eventhough I think that 1 is suffice), I would prefer him partnering Mustafic with Isa Halim.

What do you think?

Choosing the Lineup II - the Defence!

Who will protect the keeper?

The defenders will forever be the unsung heroes of any football team. Same goes for those who are protecting the keeper. However, the choice of defenders will always be one of the priorities of any coach as a team will always be built from the back.

Noh Rahman had always made the right-back position his. An unsung hero for the Lions, Noh Rahman is a no nonsense type of defender who is complemented by his ability to assist with his accurate passing and crossing. He is however a very senior Lion and he is not as fast as he used to be. This time around, Rosman Sulaiman of Home United looks set to challenge him for the spot and in my opinion, could be the better option in games such as the Philippines and Myanmmar while reserving the big game against Vietnam for Noh Rahman. And if all else fails, Baihakki can also play in this position.

At the left back position, Saiful Esah was expected to fill that up until his injury ensured that he will miss the season. So, in comes the ever reliable left-back in Jumaat Jantan, who can also play at right back. Steady on the ball and well built, the Home United player is the best choice to play at left back, unless Raddy decides to shift Daniel Bennett there and partner Baihakki with Precious or Afiq Yunos. A highly unlikely scenario though.

Finally, the two centre back positions will be the most hotly contested. A toss up between Baihakki, Bennett and Precious is the most likely decision. However, lets not forget that we have Afiq Yunos and Safuwan Baharudin in the wings, waiting for their opportunity to pounce if any of the three defenders become complacent. And trust me, Raddy is willing to give his youngsters the opportunity, especially in the game against Philippines. So far, Afiq Yunos and Safuwan have never failed to impress Raddy when they get the call up. An example would be the game against Burnley earlier this year. However, it is almost a certainty that the two centre backs position will be filled by Bennett and Baihakki. Depending on the opponents, if they are more physical, Precious would then come in.

My pick for back four : Rosman Sulaiman, Jumaat Jantan, Baihakki Khaizan, Daniel Bennett

Enter your pick at the comments section below.

Choosing the lineup - Hassan Sunny or Lionel Lewis?

A blessing or a curse?

Often in national teams all around the world, the coach will have the dilemma of choosing which keeper will be in the first XI. Take for example, Spain. They have a choice between Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina and Victor Valdez, all of whom can walk into any national side in the world or even into any top club. To make matters worse (or better), they have De Gea, another up and coming goalkeeping star.

Raddy too have this dilemma, but nevertheless one that he welcomes, anytime. In contention for the place between the sticks are two long-serving keepers in Hassan Sunny and Lionel Lewis, undoubtedly the best goalkeepers around in this region. Both players are similar in every department as both are strong in the air, are agile and have quick reflexes. Both too started off their professional careers in Geylang United before moving on to Young Lions and then now at two of the very best local clubs in Tampines Rovers and Home United respectively. However, eventhough Lionel Lewis have been the first choice for the national teams in recent years, it is Hassan Sunny, in my opinion that holds the edge over his teammate as well as rival for the spot.

Firstly, fitness. Lionel Lewis has just returned from an injury which kept him out of training while Hassan Sunny have been injury free throughout the season and even played in the Singapore Cup final. Going into a major tournament like this, Raddy would surely not want to gamble on a player that is short of match fitness and is not yet 100% fit. So Hassan 1-0 Lionel.

Secondly, form. Lionel Lewis have been ever reliable, especially in the colours of the national team. So too is Hassan. However, this season, Lionel Lewis have had a few clumsy moments while playing for Home United and although Lionel may not be short on confidence, Raddy have to take note that there is no room for error in every department if he wants to bring back the title to the Lion City. Hassan on the other hand was stable throughout the season which earned him a nomination for player of the season. Therefore, based on form, Hassan edges Lionel in this aspect.

However, it must also be noted that the Suzuki Cup, is Lionel Lewis' tournament. And why do I say that? Never has Lionel Lewis fail to deliver the goods in previous tournaments and in 2005 edition, he was also named the most valuable player. Not bad for a goalkeeper. And for that, it really makes the job for Raddy even tougher.

My take is, whoever gets the spot to be in the first XI, I firmly believe that he will do a fantastic job, especially with the mean defence in front of him. And so for the choice between the two, my head says Hassan Sunny while my heart tells me to pick Lionel Lewis.

U4U - Truly a Class Act!

U4U- never have I respected Man Utd fans so much

U4U – Truly a Class Act

Liverpool have the Kop, Inter and Milan have their respective ultras and closer to home, Arema Indonesia have their well-known Aremania to count on. In the 2010 edition of the S-League, Sengkang Punggol can be proud to boast that they have the U4U (United For United) group of fans to cheer them on in every single game they play.

Yes, Sengkang Punggol, the cellar dwellars and the underdogs of the S-League.

So what makes the U4U fraternity support the dolphins? After all, they are known to be a group of fans who have supported Manchester United, only familiar to success, all their life and with their hearts and soul.

According to one of its members, Mervin, they are very close to the coach of the dolphins, Aide Iskandar, also a United fan. Also, they believe that it is their duty as fans to support local football and it is ultimately their passion. That passion goes beyond just supporting winning teams, but also to stand by the team through thick and thin, winning or losing.

I have seen these guys in action personally this season. Even when their team (Sengkang Punggol) were trailing in games, they kept on cheering and singing, replicating the scenes that can only be found in the stands in the English Premier League. I am not talking about hooliganism but rather the kind of support that every footballer wants to have and the kind of feeling that passionate players like Noh Alam Shah thrives on and is currently enjoying in Malang.

So, this leaves me with another question. Why don’t other fans from unofficial or official fan clubs of teams like Liverpool and Arsenal do the same?

And for this, I have come up with my own conclusion. Passion!

What these guys from U4U have is simply the fact that they have pure passion for football and they support it for the love of the game and nothing else. They may have attracted some controversy during the course of the season but in my books, they are truly a class act.

Good on you guys!

A Night fit For the Stars

As I crossed over the bridge from Vivocity to St James' Powerstation on Sunday evening, I could not believe that I was going to where I was going. Finally after 15 long years as a fan of the S-League, I will attend my very first S-League awards night and what an experience it was.

Seeing the likes of my heroes ( well, not for Etoile players...) making their way in on the red carpet sent chills down my spine, literally. What capped off the evening for me was the fact that some of the players, Isa Halim and Aleksandar Duric in particular, recognising and giving me their thumbs up before heading in to the venue proper.

To many others, attending the MTV music awards or the Academy Awards would be an experience of a lifetime. To me, this day will  forever be remembered for the rest of my life.

So now, as I waited with the others at the media holding area, one by one, the award winners went up.

First up, Hariss Harun, surprisingly clinching the Young Player of the Year award. A humble man he was, looking as cool as a cucumber as he posed with his trophy and answered the many questions that the reporters had for him. Many other awards followed soon after but none so more important to me than the award presented to my favourite player, Aleksandar Duric, for scoring 300 goals in local football.

As the night grew more exciting and entertaining (with the funny video clips shown), it also became more intense as the two most prestigious awards were given out. Vorawan surprisingly was presented the coach of the year and Shahril Ishak deservingly claimed the Player of the Year award to cap of a remarkable year. The national captain received the award on top of his goal of the year award. He acknowledged that his successful season would not be made possible without the efforts of his ex-team, Home United as well as the coaching staff that had helped him throughout his career.

And so, the night officially ended at nine, but i decided to stay on as I mingled with the other media personnel which I felt was very fruitful. Speaking with Pohui as well as other bloggers and reporters, we had an enjoyable time talking about Singapore football and nothing else.

Countdown to S-League Awards NIght - Player of The Year

1. Aleksandar Duric (Tampines Rovers)
Mr 300 and walking legend. What more can I say about this 40 year old role model who has been the bright spark in the Rovers' team attacking front. A good partner to longtime servant, Aliff Shaffaein, he has won the hearts of the Tampines faithful. To me, this man can do no wrong considering the circumstances he is in. He is my favourite player and this may sound bias but I believe he will clinch the award.

 2. Shahril Ishak ( Home Utd)
In the seasons before this, it seemed that it was
almost impossible for the national player to even buy a goal. But this season, under new coach Lee Lim Saeng, he thrived and became undoubtedly Home Utd's most important player. A season  which saw him made captain of the national team and earned a contract to play overseas, everything has been right for this attacking midfielder who can play up front as well. A darkhorse tag for this award.
 3. Hassan Sunny (Tampines Rovers)
It was reported that the national keeper is sick and tired of winning silvers in club football. However, in spite a fantastic year and welcoming a new born baby into is family, it seems that the trend is likely to continue. His contributions have been outstanding to the Stags' cause and aided with a backline of 3 reliable defenders in Croissant, Kaneko and Yo-Seb, he has managed to keep many clean sheets this season.
 4. Frederic Mendy (Etoile Fc)
Favourite for the Young Player of the year award but hardly the outstanding one in this category going against the likes of the legendary Duric and national heroes in Shahril and Hassan Sunny. Still, it could work in his favour due to the fact that he is a newcomer into the league and the fact that he finished top scorer. A win in this award will definitely cap of an already memorable season!

LIONSDIEHARD'S VERDICT : Aleksandar Duric
DARKHORSE : Shahril Ishak

Rounding off predictions for every category:
1. Player of the Year: Aleksandar Duric
2. Coach of the Year: Darren Stewart
3. Young Player of the Year: Frederic Mendy
4. Top Scorer: Frederic Mendy (assured)
5. Goal of the Year : Shahril Ishak (vs SAFFC)

Countdown to S-League Awards Night - Coach of the Year

Vorawan - a past winner but unlikely to win this year

A coach's role is integral in a team's success. LionsAllTheWay will now take a look at this year's nominees.

1. Patrick Vallee (Etoile Fc) : Dubbed as the Jose Mourinho of Singapore football, Vallee is more known for his troubles with the officials rather than his coaching abilities. Like Mourinho, he protects his players and is very passionate about the game. However, even with 2 winner's medal, his season will be remembered as one that got him sent off 4 times, a tally that not even the most hardcore of players can achieve in a season. A favourite for this award.

2. Darren Stewart (Gombak Utd) : Think of someone who can bring out the best in what your team has to offer and you will think of Darren Stewart. A former S-League player himself, plying his trade for Balestier, Darren is now a well-respected coach in the local football fraternity. He will always be remembered for his work with his team that lacks the star quality but uncovering gems like Hamqamaal Shah and Jeremy Chiang shows that you can get results even with a team that lacks the star quality.

3. Lee Lim Saeng (Home Utd) : Former Korean national player, Lee, took over the reigns at Home Utd this season and after a sluggish start and a spat with team captain Peres, it seemed that the board made a terrible decision. However, as the season went on, coach Lee managed to teach his ideas and bring in players of his own. This success was reflected in him guiding the Protectors to an amazing run which saw them beat title contenders Etoile and Tampines Rovers. However, losing Shahril Ishak and Shahdan Sulaiman about the same time was an obvious blow as they failed to win against Sengkang and Balestier, which in my opinion, cost them the title. A Darkhorse for this award, surely.

4. Richard Bok (SAFFC) : Another former award winner, Richard Bok decided that it was time to overhaul his team. He started off by signing experienced campaigners in Noh Rahman and Indra Sahdan as well as reputable foreigners in Niklas Sandberg and Federico Martinez. However, the overhaul meant that it needed time for adjustment and this led to a roller coaster season, even for a team that boasts many international players. It seems however that the poor season by SAFFC's standards will see him going home empty handed from the awards night.

5. Vorawan Chitavanich (Tampines Rovers) : A season that saw him finish with 2 runners-up medal, it started with a masterstroke when he signed Aleksandar Duric. However, luck was not on his side as not once was he able to field his best XI as Khairul Amri and Qiu Li went down with injuries. Yet another trophy-less season, it seemed that the Thai would leave but after a turn of events, it looks more likely he will stay on with the Eastern Giants. Nevertheless, I feel that he will not be able to add on to his previous coach of the year awards.

Countdown to S-League Awards Night - Young Player of the Year Award

Will Frederic Mendy clinch another award?

Will Hariss be able to fly the Young Lions flag?

or can Shahdan Sulaiman spring a surprise win?

The awards night is scheduled to held this Sunday, 21st November at St James Powerstation. In the days leading up to the awards night, I will make my predictions on who will clinch the three most prestigious awards - Young Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Player of the Year Awards.

Young Player Of The Year Award 2010:

1. Frederic Mendy : One League Cup winners medal, One S-League winners winners medal, Top Scorer Award and 2 Nominations for S-League awards night. That alone is enough to tell you what a fantastic season Frederic Mendy has had. The lanky Etoile Fc striker will definitely be the odds on favourite to win this year's Young Player of the Year award. He is strong in the air and his finishing rivals any foreign player to have played in the league from Jure Eres to Egmar Goncalves and not forgetting Mirko Grabovac and our walking legend, Aleksandar Duric. His flaw, however, lies on his tendency to fall needlessly after light challenges. Nevertheless, the top contender for the award.

2. Mamadou Diallo : One might wonder that if Sengkang were to lose him during the season, could the dolphins actually finish above the rams this season. The forward from Guinea has the skills, the touches but unfortunately lacks the support from his team. I still remember the freekick he scored against Geylang in a 4-1 loss at Jalan Besar that had class written all over it. Tough luck for the Guinean player who definitely has what it takes to go against the best in the S-League.

3. Taisuke Akiyoshi : In a topsy turvy season, one man apart from Ivan Jerkovic stood out from the Warriors lineup and his name is Taisuke Akiyoshi. With Mustaqim trying his best on the right, Taisuke led the attack from the left and Albirex's loss is certainly SAFFC's gain. With a certainty that he is staying on with the Warriors next season, many will not rule out SAFFC's chances of bouncing back if they achieve the same level of consistency as this skillful winger of theirs.

4. Shahdan Sulaiman : Noone in the league this season can ever stand up and say that he has scored for two different clubs this season. Neither can someone boast the fact that he has played in matches in the Sultan of Selangor Cup, Asian Games, the hectic s-league season and the Singapore Cup Final. However, Shahdan Sulaiman has done all that, and all in one season. He is also expected to be in the final Suzuki Cup squad for Singapore. Alas, luck was not on his side. In spite of his admirable efforts on and off the pitch to balance the impossible, he defiitely won't be the odds on favourite for this award. However, never say never to this man who is currently plying his trade for his boyhood club, Tampines Rovers.

5. Hariss Harun : He is Singapore's future. Hariss Harun literally carried his team, Young Lions, throughout the season. A model of consistency, Hariss Harun has played at centre-back, centre midfield, attacking midfielder and even as a striker. Like Shahdan Sulaiman, Hariss Harun needs to juggle many things and for his case, his studies and his professional football career. A hardman on the pitch and a gentlemen off it, Hariss Harun certainly deserves some recognition for his efforts.  The youngest ever player to don the national colours in the senior side, there will definitely be more great years to come from this Nanyang Polytechnic student.

Fan Support in Singapore - A pipe dream?

The Bangkok Glass fans at the Singapore Cup Final earned my respect!
Apart from the debate on whether foreign teams are dominating Singapore football , Sunday's Singapore Cup Final opened my eyes on what true fans really look like. In the grandstand, behind the Bangkok Glass bench, a bunch of Bangkok Glass fans were seen jumping up and down throughout the entire match, singing and cheering their team on. It was not as if they were in their thousands but the presence of the die hards, numbering of about 30 fans , managed to bring life and atmosphere. More importantly, their passion rubbed off and influenced the others to join them in their singing and cheering. It was as though Jalan Besar is their homeground.

Over at the Tampines Rovers end, the mood was rather different. There was a drum, but it was sadly not used effectively to liven up the mood at the Tampines camp. This brings me to my point of whether Singapore football can one day attract as much fan support as in the leagues in Indonesia (click on the link on Arema fans) as well as in Thailand, as examplified by the Bangkok supporters.

My question is, is it really difficult to get Singaporeans to cheer for their team on? What is the main problem actually? Is it the mentality? Is it about "saving face"? or is it just the fact that Singaporeans do not have a particular sense of belonging to the club.

My dream for Singapore football is of course for us to play in the World Cup. But it would be an embarassment one day if we are to be in the World Cup but without supporters. So, the journey actually starts now. My point of view is that fans can play a significant role in driving the standard of local football. Imagine if we are to support our players more enthusiastically. The high attendance as well as the purchase of merchandise  would boost revenue . Also, with us being in the stands, more sponsors would naturally come in for opportunities of marketing and advertisement. It all thus produce a multiplier effect that would one day make local football a thriving industry and hence allow more talent to come in. As far as I am concerned, if we can do it for our Liverpools, our Manchesters and our Barcelonas, we can surely do it for our OWN COUNTRYMEN!

Do click on the link videos to reflect. And of course, your comments are most welcomed!

The Week Singapore Football Died?

Both Young Lions and Tampines Rovers crumbled when it mattered
First,  Etoile FC became the first foreign team to win the S-League. Then, after a promising start in their Asian Games campaign, the Young Lions proved that it was a false dawn as they were well beaten by Kuwait and then surprisingly walloped by India.

Then, in the cruelest of fashion, Bangkok Glass ensured that no Singapore team will win a trophy this season after beating Tampines Rovers, 1-0, courtesy of an own goal by Benoit Croissant.

And with that, it ensured that the local football purists had to endure a torrid week, seeing their local pride dented by foreign teams. On a positive note, it could not get any worse for the fans. Or can it?

Two years have now passed and it is that time of the year again for the AFF Suzuki Cup. This time around, Singapore have assembled a very strong lineup and with the emergence of Hariss Harun and the rebirth of Shahril Ishak, coach Raddy will have a much welcomed headache picking the final squad that will travel to Hanoi. Thus, this could be the last chance for the local footballing heroes to redeem themselves and reward their long suffering fans.

Could this week be a turning point for Singapore football for the better or will this week prove that Singapore football is on a path of decline? What are your thoughts?

Foreign Clubs - Necessary Evil?

Etoile FC - won the league, created controversies and injected good football
As Etoile FC ended the season with a 3rd place finish in the Singapore Cup, they ensured that they have won a medal in all the three domestic competitions they took part in. Now, the debate on whether it is really necessary to have foreign clubs in the local league is set to take place again with many still sitting on the fence regarding the debate.

In my humble opinion, I feel that this should just be a temporary measure. What Etoile FC brings to the league is much needed after so many seasons of predictable outcomes. When Etoile FC plays the local clubs, they somehow stepped up their game and the fans, not wanting to lose pride, stepped up their support and became ever more vocal. This was sorely missed in the previous seasons.

Then again, we have had so many foreign clubs, beginning with Sinchi FC. Yes, they may have brought the talent in such as Shi Jiayi who have gone on to represent and play well for our Lions. But then again this goes to show that NOT EVERY FOREIGN CLUB can value-add to the league.

So what matters most is the selection process rather than the generalisation that foreign clubs are all better than the local ones. Look at how we demolish teams like Sporting Afrique and Beijing Guo'an. Yet, we can learn from the management of Albirex Niigata, which have been exceptional and excellent in their day-to-day running of the club.

So, is having foreign clubs in the local league doing more good or harm? Let me just conclude with my opinion that we need them right now.

Stags vs Rabbits - a Tom Yam Affair!

Or will Vorawan outsmart his countrymen?
WIll Thai team unity prevail?

The Singapore Cup final this Sunday is expected to be a fiery encounter between two teams with similar playing style due to their respective Thai influence. This match too will be in everyone's attention as it is the only domestic competition left that a local team have an opportunity to win.

Coming into this fixture, the Rabbits ( Bangkok Glass) had to overcome fierce competition from the Warriors and league champions, Etoile FC, which they had impressively beaten. Also, they had to contend with a quarter-final encounter with Australian club, South Melbourne. In fact, along the way, they managed to earn the respect of the local supporters, something other foreign clubs have trouble with. They boast a couple of ex-Thai internationals in their ranks such as Kitisak Rawangpa and Suttee Suksomkit, a former Tampines Rovers' favourite as well!

Tampines Rovers on the other hand had the luck of the draw which includes Young Lions and Balestier Khalsa. However, they will be without their star players, Qiu Li as well Kaneko who are injured and suspended respectively. Also, their morale could have been dented after their dramatic final day fixture which saw them finish second in the league title race.

So who will prevail? Turn up at Jalan Besar on Sunday to find out!

A Review of the Final Day:

the joy turned into disappointment at Tampines
The air of anticipation surrounds the fans in 3 stadiums in Singapore tonight as the 2010 S.League nears its climax with the title to be decided within 90 minutes. All Etoile FC needed to do to win the title was to win against Albirex Niigata FC (S) at Jurong East Stadium while at Tampines Stadium, Tampines Rovers would need to win against Balastier Khalsa and hope Albirex wins against Etoile. Home United would stand an outside chance of snatching the title if they win against SAFFC at Jalan Besar, whist hoping the results go against both Etoile and Tampines Rovers.
At the Jurong East Stadium, Albirex Niigata stands in the way of Etoile, with the battle cry of “Do it! Again!!”, in reference to The White Swan’s 1-0 victory of Etoile on July 6, whereas Etoile was armed with the belief that the S.League would be won tonight. Led by their captain, No. 9, Matthias Verschave and spearheaded by their top marksman, No. 12, Frederic Mendy, the visitors, in the away strip of white top and blue shorts stepped onto the field at 7.30pm with the home team, in their traditional home strip of orange.
The match had hardly gone to its first gear when Albirex stunned Etoile with a quick 2nd minute lead when their No. 21, Kazuki Kobayashi scored with a top corner shot, leaving no chance for the Etoile custodian, Yohann Lacroix. Etoile’s situation was compounded with the news of evergreen Tampines Rovers striker Aleksander Duric scoring in the 5th minute, sending the Stags in prime position for the title.
From that moment, Etoile went in the search for an equaliser with them coming close on the 8th minute. Another goal opportunity came in the 10th minute but the efforts of Flavien Michelini just went over.
The match’s first yellow card was shown to Albirex’s Fumiya Kobayashi for a foul on Mendy, with the subsequent free-kick went over the Albirex goal. At that point, Tampines went 2-0, courtesy of Aliff Shafaein.
Etoile again came close in the 28th minute when a pass inadvertently hit the top close with Mendy in position just 2 yards to the goal line, but shot somewhat went over the top post. Then in the 29th minute, Etoile was awarded a penalty although several Albirex players were protesting as the foul was claimed to be outside the box. Koto Kobayashi, Albirex’s No. 22 subsequently received a yellow card for his continued protests to the referee. Etoile’s Loic Leclercq duly converted the penalty, giving Etoile the all-important boost, taking the scoreline to 1-1.
Etoile continued to assault the Albirex goal in search for the lead, coming close in the 42nd minute, with a shot hitting the crossbar from 20 yards. Etoile received its first yellow card, with the Etoile captain, Verschave, the unfortunate recipient. Albirex restored their lead in the 2nd minute of added time, through Kazuki Kobayashi, courtesy of a rebound from an apparent poor clearance from Laccroix.
The half-time score read 2-1 to Albirex. Tampines had scored a third goal through Jamil Ali prior in the 43th minute.
The second half started with Etoile determined to score the equaliser, with efforts coming as early as the 50th minute. Their efforts were rewarded in the 64th minute when Mendy scored from a rebound from a stopped effort earlier for a simple tap-in. News comes in with Balestier scoring a goal to bring the score on Tampines Stadium to 3-1. Mendy then scored his second goal in the 76th minute with a header in the 6-yard area, putting Etoile in the driving seat. Mendy again would play a pivotal role in earning a freekick in the 80th minute, when holding off 3 Albirex players marking him he was fouled. From the freekick, Verschave headed the ball into the net, sending the Etoile players and fans into raptures, knowing the title is sealed.
Tampines had scored through Ismail Mukthar to bring the score 4-1 to Tampines Rovers, but with Etoile having a commanding 4-2 lead over Albirex, Ismail’s goal serves as scant consolation as Etoile held on until the end of the match.
With the referee’s blow of the whistle, celebrations erupted in Jurong East Stadium as Etoile FC had created history, becoming the first foreign team to win the S.League title. Mendy’s brace in the match earns him the title of Top Scorer, making his victory even sweeter.

History Made, Hearts Broken

the Rovers fans came out in full force

but the Stags still came out short

Everthing started as planned at the Tampines Stadium. Going into the break leading 3-0 and with Albirex leading Etoile FC, the title seemed to be heading to the east. However, news streamed in of Etoile equalising and taking the lead soon after, turned the party mood into one as though they heard that someone had just passed away.

It was as though Balestier's goal through Paul Cunningham was an omen to say that Tampines will not have the last laugh after all as afew minutes after his goal, news of Etoile taking the lead was broken by fans who were checking their iPhone for the latest scores. Then, hopes were shattered when the score was 4-2 to the Stars at the Jurong East Stadium.

Nevertheless, the Stags did their best even after knowing that the cause was lost as they pushed hard to find the fourth goal. Ismadi Mokhtar, surprisingly, had the honour of scoring the last goal for the Stags this season.

At the final whistle, eventhough their favourite team did not deliver the trophy, the Stags supporters admirably cheered on their team. Shouts of " we love you rovers" , "we are proud of you" and "we will win on Sunday" were heard from the stands as the players saluted the support that they were receiving.

It is still not over yet for the Stags though and they will have to pick themselves up fast with a cup final tie this Sunday. Surely, the Singapore Cup will not be won by a foreign team after Etoile FC clinched the league cup and league title? or will this be a season in which no local team wins any domestic competition?

3 Matches, 2 Hours, 1 Champion

Will Etoile remain calm and do their job?

Or will the Rovers snatch it late?

After 32 rounds of fixtures and exciting matches in the season, it will all finally end tomorrow, 10 November. As it stands, Etoile are in pole position to create history and become the first foreign team to win the S-League. However, standing in their way is another foreign opposition in Albirex Niigata, the only team that have yet to lose to the Stars this season.

The Stags on the other hand will have to beat the Tigers first, before they can turn their attention to what is happening in the Jurong East Stadium. If they win and Etoile either draws or loses, then the title will be theirs as well as a Champions League qualifying berth. They will be missing a key player in Shahdan Sulaiman who is in China for the Asian Games. Key players like Hassan Sunny and Aleksandar Duric too only returned on Sunday from their successful VFF cup outing. However, the team spirit is high at the Tampines camp and this too will not be their last opportunity of silverware this season as they have a final on Sunday to play.

Over at the Jalan Besar Stadium, Home United will have to hope for two miracles and pray that they can beat the reigning champions in order to clinch an unlikely title. At least the fans at Jalan Besar can catch a glimpse of the trophy which will be placed there before being delivered to either the Tampines or Jurong East Stadium.

As it is right now, from the poll conducted, a whopping 76% think that Tampines will clinch the title while another 14% is doubtful that Etoile will surrender their lead.

As a Tampines fan, I do hope that I will be able to celebrate with the players, at 9.30 pm tomorrow!

The Real Die Hard Fans

Daniel (left) and Izwan - epitomise what die hard fans should be
Ever since our exit from the Malaysia Cup, the number of fans backing the Lions have also dwindled. Some say that this is due to the lack of skill from the current batch of players while some say that those who don the national colours play without the passion. However, there remains another set of fans that believe that it is in this time of struggle that they should even support the Lions more. These people are the real die-hard fans!

Every now and then, the Lions will attract  the fans back to the stadium to cheer them on, especially during semi-final encounters or even big tournaments like the Y.O.G (for the cubs). With all the hype and the possibility of winning, many will claim that they are true backers and supporters of the Lions. Just take a look back in 2005 and 2007 when we won the Suzuki Cup back to back. Everyone claims to have been there and always backing the Lions. Surely, you have got to be kidding me!

Just by jumping on the bandwagon does not make you a die-hard fan, and definitely not overnight. That would not do justice to the real sets of die hard fans, just like Daniel and Izwan (in the above picture). Not only do they support the lions, they believe in them. They were there sending off the Lions at the airport to Vietnam for the little known VFF Cup and they were there receiving them back. All in the name of showing support and letting the Lions know that there are people backing them.

They were there for every single competition, every single friendly match and most of the S-League games, supporting their favourite local clubs -Home United (Daniel) and the now-defunct Tg Pagar Utd (Izwan). Daniel even watches the Cubs' (under 15) friendly  matches and that says alot!

So, with the Suzuki Cup being held at the end of the year, the Lions have a good chance of making it to another semi-finals (at least), and all the hype would be re-created again. My hope is that this will spark the birth of another generation of die-hard fans who are there not just for the successes and the highs, but also when the Lions are not playing well and being beaten all over. Sure fans are known to only want to be associated with a successful team. However, my take is, as a fan and a countryman, we are the only ones that have the duty to support our Lions.

I will be there for the Lions through thick and thin. Will you?

The Great Wall of Izwan!

Izwan and gang - worked hard to keep Qatar at bay
No one gave them a chance. Especially in this match against defending champions, Qatar. But at the end of the day, the Young Lions can take heart from their draw, even giving those watching the game a lesson in defending resolutely.

To mention Izwan alone would be unfair. However, he was indeed the "young lion -of-the-match", making save after save, frustrating the Qataris. Together with Faritz Abdul Hameed, Afiq Yunos and the ever dependable Safuwan Baharudin, they kept their bigger and tougher opponents at bay.

Going into the match, the defending champions were definitely the odds on favourite, even more so as they fielded experience campaigners and Brazilian-born players. Nevertheless, they could not break down the real "great wall" in China for the day.

The Young Lions too even had the chance to snatch a win late in the game with Erwan Gunawan just missing the target. Who knows what it could have been if we had Khairul Amri and Mustafic in the side!

Next up: Kuwait!

Always remember, the Young Lions fear none!

Make Us Dream!

Captain Shahril - hoping to inspire his young teammates
If there is one positive omen that the Young Lions can take note of, it is in this same competition way back in 1966 that another Singapore team made the fans dream. Back then, there was no Kallang Roar, no such thing as the S-League and definitely no Young Lions. But a team led by Majidd Ariff, Quah Kim Lye and Wilfred Skinner  took to the pitch to finish fourth. Heroes were made and the fans started to dream of greater things to come for Singapore football.

Now, the opportunity could not come at a perfect time. The squad are deprived of the best players with key players like Mustafic and Khairul Amri being withdrawn from the squad. Young Lions such as the talented Khairul Nizam and Madhu Mohana will not be playing due to suspensions given out to them. Worse, injuries to players like Yaser Hanapi means that the squad list are not confirmed up until the last week!

WIth that said, noone will expect the Young Lions to go through beyond the group stage containing former champions Qatar and India. However, a pressure-less team have always been known to perform better than they usually do. If they try hard enough and with a little luck on their side, we could possibly see Sundram's side sneaking in results.

What is key will always be having faith in themselves and play their usual game. And trust me, when i saw the core of the Young Lions team play a couple of times this season, when in sync, these boys can really be a handful for their opponents.

So the journey starts today against Qatar. My message to you guys is good luck and Make Us Dream!

Thoughts on VFF Cup outing

Shi Jiayi - one of the many players that played well in Vietnam

Without the services of many key players such as Mustafic Fahrudin, Shahril Ishak, Khairul Amri and Hariss Harun, Coach Raddy had no choice but to call upon the services of new faces such as Hamqaamal Shah to the side. On a brighter note, their call ups meant that they were given an opportunity to show what they can do in their national colours.

Their introduction to the side surprisingly injected a renewed form of energy into the side, led by the evergreen and S-League legend, Aleksandar Duric, who finished the campaign with three goals for the Lions.

A disappointing loss against World Cup team, North Korea, after leading for most of the game taught the Lions a valuable lesson in concentration. They did well to defend admirably against Vietnam but a mistake from new boy, Adrian Dhanaraj, allowed the Vietnamese to equalise late in the game.

Against the speedy side in South Korea (under 23), the Lions showed that experience is still very much important in the game of football. The oldest player on the pitch finished with 2 poacher's effort to ensure that Singapore's VFF Cup campaign ended on a high.

Coach Raddy will definitely be pleased with his side's performance.

The fans on the other hand are quietly confident that the Lions will be able to win the prestigious Suzuki Cup in December, based on  their beloved team's performances in the VFF Cup.

Final Standings:
1. North Korea
2. Singapore
3. South Korea (under 23)
4. Vietnam

ALEKSANDAR DURIC - A TRIBUTE

ALEX holding the card made by me

He may be 40 years old but it is as though he is in the middle of his career. But he is no ordinary player. His name is Aleksandar Duric!

With a life motto of "no drinking, no smoking, no alcohol and no late nights", it is no wonder why he is still going strong at an age when most players have already hung up their boots afew seasons back and beginning their careers as coaches or managers. He truly is a role model to myself and many local football fans. To me, Aleksandar Duric can do no wrong on the pitch.

His form may not be as good as his previous seasons with the warriors but nevertheless, his influence and reading of the game for the stags is second to none. Never in my life have i seen a player with this level of humility eventhough he is the star in the Tampines team and the Lions team.

Once again; WE LOVE YOU DURIC! and thank you for all the wonderful memories you have brought to the beautiful game in this beautiful city.

Fans unite against Etoile FC

(Bangkok Glass team had no trouble in gaining support)

Never in the history of the S-League have we seen a scenario whereby fans from all the different local clubs come together to support another club. However, this was the scene at the Queenstown Stadium on Friday as local football purists unite in showing their support for Bangkok Glass FC or rather their "hatred" against Etoile FC.

Thankfully, their boos did not backfire as Bangkok Glass need not break into second gear to ensure that Etoile FC would not get their hands on another Cup after their League Cup triumph, early in the season. Goals from twin terrors, Chatree and Gbenga Ajayi sealed the win for the popular Thai team.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see whether these same fans will continue to support their adopted team from Thailand or will they revert back to their mentality of "local clubs only" and support the Stags next Sunday.

What can be certain is that Etoile FC will have to endure another round of boos and jeers when they face the very popular Young Lions team on Saturday for bronze, at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
