LATW Statement on Pre-match Crowd Trouble at Singapore vs Malaysia, 8 June
There was an incident of crowd trouble before the Singapore vs Malaysia friendly at Jalan Besar Stadium on 8 June. The incident involved a group of Malaysian supporters who had been marching towards the stadium near the entrance to the gallery section. They had stopped to sing their chants in front of the section of Singaporean fans waiting to enter the stadium at their designated gate. Some of them began to taunt the Singaporean fans, trying to illicit some reaction from the Singaporeans.
Unfortunately, one Singaporean fan, wearing a white t-shirt depicting his alliance to an unidentified fan group not belonging to the LATW umbrella, decided to take up their challenge, and returned some insults to the Malaysian suppporters. This sparked off a violent reaction from the Malaysians, as they began charging towards the Singaporean supporters. Particularly, the Singaporean in the white t-shirt began trading blows with various Malaysians. Security managed to get the situation under control, but not without difficulty.
LATW wishes to inform the public that it was not involved in inciting reactions from the Malaysians. We maintained our composure during the fracas, and also helped to ensure the brawl did not spread to other innocent individuals. LATW's policy is strictly one of non-violence and non-confrontation, and in this situation we stuck to this policy.
